Musk x Brazil Judge Moraes

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X has announced its immediate shutdown in Brazil. This decision stems from a heated legal conflict with Brazilian top judge Alexandre de Moraes. The dispute revolves around the platform’s responsibilities to combat disinformation.

X’s Global Government Affairs team accused Judge Moraes of threatening their Brazilian legal representative with arrest for not complying with censorship orders. They described his actions as “incompatible with democratic governance.”

In a statement, the team said, “Last night, Alexandre de Moraes threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we do not comply with his censorship orders.”

Elon Musk himself condemned Moraes, calling him an “utter disgrace to justice.” He further explained that the demands by Judge Moraes would require X to break multiple laws, including Brazilian, Argentinian, American and international law. Musk stated, “Due to demands by ‘Justice’ Alexandre in Brazil that would require us to break (in secret) Brazilian, Argentinian, American and international law, X has no choice but to close our local operations in Brazil.”

This shutdown follows ongoing tensions between Musk and Moraes, who has been actively trying to fight the spread of disinformation online.

Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block certain accounts accused of spreading false information and hate messages, including some belonging to supporters of Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro.
