Murtala Ajaka, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the November 11, 2023, Kogi State governorship election, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other security agencies to investigate the alleged attack on him and his supporters by unidentified thugs at the Supreme Court on Friday.

GWG.ng reports that the incident occurred at the Supreme Court in Abuja on Friday, following the court’s dismissal of Ajaka’s appeal challenging the election victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Usman Ododo.

In a statement released on Saturday, Ajaka strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “an assault on democracy itself.” He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, emphasizing the need for justice to deter such acts in the future. “In a democratic society, attacks on a governorship candidate, simply because he pursued a legal route to reclaim his stolen mandate, are inexcusable and will not be tolerated,” Ajaka stated.

Reflecting on the Supreme Court’s judgment, which affirmed Ododo’s victory, Ajaka expressed respect for the court’s role in upholding the rule of law but firmly rejected the decision. He lamented what he described as a “miscarriage of justice” in Nigeria’s judiciary, expressing deep disappointment and concern about the erosion of public trust in the legal system. “The judgment has left many questions unanswered and has further eroded the trust of the Nigerian people in the judiciary,” Ajaka said. “We reject the outcome, even though we have no other options available, and we will abide by the decision of the apex court.”

Ajaka also took the opportunity to thank his legal and media teams for their tireless efforts in pursuing what he believes was a stolen mandate. He urged them to remain resilient and prepare for a stronger comeback in the 2027 elections. “To my supporters, I feel your pain and disappointment. We did our best, leaving no stone unturned, but the system failed us. We fought a good fight, but the outcome is not a reflection of our efforts,” he said. “However, we take solace in the fact that 2027 is around the corner, and we will know what to do. We will regroup, reassess, and come back stronger.”

As this chapter closes, Ajaka declared a shift in focus towards supporting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in holding outgoing Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, accountable. He pledged to provide all necessary support to ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
