Amidst the ongoing fuel scarcity crisis gripping the nation’s capital, taxi drivers in Abuja are struggling to make ends meet, with some describing their current situation as “hell.”

Chidiebere, a local taxi driver, captured the frustrations of many taxi drivers in Abuja as he recounted the toll the fuel scarcity has taken on his daily life and livelihood.

“I can’t do any work since morning; I’m stuck at the filling station,” Chidiebere lamented, visibly exhausted from hours of waiting in line for fuel. For drivers like him, the scarcity isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a major disruption to their ability to earn a living.

With fuel prices soaring to as much as ₦1,200 per liter, drivers are left in a difficult position, struggling to balance the cost of fuel with the fares they charge passengers. “If we buy at ₦1,200, how much are we going to tell the passenger to pay?” Chidiebere asked, highlighting the dilemma facing taxi operators who must either pass on the increased costs to passengers or absorb the loss themselves.

The impact of the fuel scarcity extends beyond individual taxi drivers in Abuja, affecting the entire transportation sector in Nigeria. As queues at filling stations grow longer and tempers flare, the ripple effects are felt by commuters who are forced to pay higher fares or face delays in finding transportation.

“We are not finding it easy,” Chidiebere concluded, his words echoing the sentiments of many who are grappling with the economic and emotional strain caused by the fuel scarcity.

As the crisis continues, the plight of taxi drivers like Chidiebere calls for urgent need for a sustainable solution to the ongoing fuel challenges in Nigeria. Until then, for many in Abuja, and Nigeria, the struggle to fill their tanks—and their pockets—remains a daily battle.
