Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has refuted reports suggesting that he has stepped down from his role. The veteran coach clarified that he remains in charge of the Nigerian national football team and is still leading the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The rumors began after sports website OwnGoalNigeria quoted Eguavoen as saying his assignment was limited to overseeing two matches—against Benin Republic and Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers. “I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys, and I want to thank the NFF leadership and all the players for their discipline and hard work,” he was reported to have said.

Following the 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and a goalless draw against Rwanda, it was widely assumed that Eguavoen’s time as interim coach had come to an end. However, upon his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday, Eguavoen, popularly known as Cerezo, firmly denied the resignation claims.

“It’s quite unfortunate that people are spreading incorrect information. In this situation, we don’t need negative stories,” Eguavoen stated. “I only mentioned that I would sit down with the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to discuss how to approach the remaining qualifying matches. When I saw the reports, I was concerned. But to be clear, I am still very much in charge as the technical director and interim coach of the Super Eagles.”

Eguavoen was appointed interim coach after German tactician Bruno Labbadia declined the role due to a tax-related disagreement. Since stepping into the position, Eguavoen has led the Super Eagles through two key matches, securing a win against the Cheetahs of Benin and a draw against the Wasps of Rwanda.

With Eguavoen now reaffirming his commitment, the NFF and fans can look forward to the continuation of his leadership as the team prepares for the remaining AFCON qualifiers.
