EFCC bias Yahaya Bello

On Wednesday night, officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) made a dramatic attempt to arrest former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, at the Kogi State Governor’s Lodge in the Asokoro District of Abuja.

According to reports, the operation was met with resistance from security operatives stationed at the lodge, leading to an altercation that involved gunfire. The area around the governor’s lodge has since been cordoned off, with movements restricted to EFCC officials and other security personnel.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Bello has now left the premises, accompanied by the incumbent Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo. As tensions ease, normalcy appears to have returned around the lodge following the failed arrest attempt.

This latest development adds another chapter to the ongoing saga beteeen Bello and the EFCC.

GWG.ng reports that in a statement released earlier on Wednesday, Bello’s media team claimed that the former governor had voluntarily presented himself at the EFCC’s office after “due consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.” However, the EFCC swiftly countered this claim, asserting that Bello remains wanted and was not in their custody.

However, EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, clarified in a statement that the former governor is still being pursued by the commission, stating: “Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello, is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, are incorrect. The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody. He remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.”

Meanwhile, Yahaya Bello’s media office, led by Ohiare Michael, released a follow-up statement maintaining that Bello had indeed visited the EFCC office but was asked to leave without being interrogated. According to the statement, Bello was accompanied to the EFCC office by Governor Ahmed Ododo.

“The former Governor holds great respect for the rule of law and has always sought to ensure due process is followed. However, EFCC officials told him he could leave without any interrogation. As we write, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello has left the EFCC office,” the statement read.

His case was last adjourned by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja to September 25, where the legal battle between Bello and the anti-graft agency is set to continue.
