Police dismissed murder musician

Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was involved in the murder of Ogene musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.

This action follows Joseph’s shooting of the popular musician, known as Igbo-Jah, last Friday, which caused significant public outrage.

In a statement released on Monday, the police confirmed that the inspector was found guilty during an orderly room trial and received the maximum penalty of dismissal. The update was provided by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Enugu State Police Command.

“The Enugu State Police Command informs the public that the orderly room trial of Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, who was involved in the murder of Ogene musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, has been concluded,” Ndukwe said.

“The Inspector was found culpable and received the maximum penalty of dismissal, followed by court prosecution in line with the Police Act and Regulations 2020.”

He also noted that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13—which oversees the commands for Anambra and Enugu States—approved the trial recommendations for both dismissal and prosecution. As a result, Joseph has been dismissed from the police force and was arraigned today, October 28, 2024, at the Enugu East Magistrate Court on murder charges.

The Chief Magistrate ordered that the former officer be remanded in the Enugu Correctional Custodial Centre, and the case file was sent to the Attorney General of Enugu State for further legal action. The trial is scheduled to continue on November 12, 2024.

Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, extended condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased musician. He expressed gratitude to the government, the people of Enugu State, and the public for their support during this case. CP Kanayo emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to maintaining discipline and accountability among its officers under his leadership.
