Boniface Sidelined With Thigh Injury After International Duty
Bayer Leverkusen striker and Nigeria international Victor Boniface is set to miss several matches after sustaining a thigh muscle injury during his time with the Super Eagles, head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed on Friday.
Speaking ahead of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga clash with Heidenheim, Alonso expressed disappointment over Boniface’s absence, describing the injury as “a shame.” While initial fears suggested the forward might be out for the rest of 2024, Alonso shared an optimistic outlook:
“We hope he will play again this year. It’s not going to be six or eight weeks, but he won’t be there tomorrow or for the Champions League game against Salzburg,” the coach stated.
Boniface, who has been pivotal for Leverkusen this season with six goals and one assist in 10 league appearances, is expected to be replaced by Patrik Schick. Alonso praised Schick’s readiness, emphasizing his importance to the team beyond Boniface’s absence.
“He is always ready. We don’t just need him now but always,” Alonso added.
Leverkusen, currently fourth in the Bundesliga standings, have struggled to replicate last season’s unbeaten domestic campaign. They trail leaders Bayern Munich by nine points after dropping 13 points in the league so far this season, a concerning figure compared to the 12 points lost throughout their entire last campaign.
Boniface’s return is eagerly awaited as the team looks to regain its momentum both domestically and in Europe.
