Controversy Erupts as UNIJOS Alumni Challenge SUG President ‘First Female President’ Claim
Jane Pwajok Kangyang, the newly elected Student Union Government (SUG) President of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), has found herself at the center of a heated debate after claiming to be the first female SUG President in the institution’s history.
While her recent landslide victory as the winner of the SUG presidential election is celebrated by many, UNIJOS alumni and students are calling her out for allegedly erasing historical facts.
Prominent among the arguments is the assertion that Ene Obi served as the university’s first female SUG President in 1989. Obi, now a well-respected activist, is credited by alumni for breaking gender barriers at the time. Others have also highlighted the achievements of Comfort Idika-Ogunye, who became the first female president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in 1995.
The controversy deepened as some questioned whether Obi was a caretaker president rather than an elected one, though this claim remains unverified. Despite the ongoing discussions, many have demanded that Pwajok issue a public apology for what they perceive as an attempt to rewrite the institution’s history.
Pwajok, who secured her position with an impressive 59.10% of the votes, emerged victorious with 1,682 votes, far ahead of her closest rival, Magaju, who garnered 969 votes. The final tally also included Francis (118 votes), Samuel Musa (54 votes), and Yakubu (24 votes).
While the new president is yet to respond to the allegations, the incident has created buzz on social media, with netizens urging her to acknowledge past female leaders who paved the way for her success.
As the dust settles, all eyes remain on Pwajok, whose next steps could either mend or further strain relations with her alma mater’s vibrant alumni network on who was the first female SUG president of UNIJOS.
