Finnish authorities have frozen the assets of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Biafran agitator, amid accusations of his involvement in terrorism-related activities.

Ekpa, who has been detained for several weeks, is currently held at Kylmäkoski prison, a high-security facility known for its stringent measures.

Reports indicate that the Finnish government has also frozen assets linked to companies associated with Ekpa and four of his alleged accomplices, who are also in custody.

According to Yle, a Finnish news outlet, Ekpa is expected to remain in detention through the Christmas and New Year holidays as Finland’s legal system does not permit bail for individuals facing terrorism charges. Mikko Laaksonen, a Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, confirmed this, stating that Ekpa would remain in custody because bail is not allowed for terrorism-related offenses.

Kylmäkoski prison, located in Akaa, Finland, is known for housing male prisoners convicted of violent crimes. It currently holds 113 inmates, including those awaiting trial. The prison gained international attention after being featured in the 2023 Netflix documentary series ‘Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons’. Yle’s Head of International Communications, Mika Ojamies, confirmed that Ekpa is being held at this facility.

Ekpa, who claims to be the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was arrested with four associates about a month ago. Finnish authorities accuse him of using social media to incite violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, with targets including civilians and government officials.

Local media reports suggest that Ekpa faces charges of inciting public violence with terrorist intent, and his alleged actions, including promoting violence and financing terrorism, were facilitated by online platforms.

This case has garnered considerable attention, particularly in Nigeria, where Ekpa has been a controversial figure due to his calls for separatist activities.
