BREAKING: Stampede At Ibadan Carnival Claims Several Lives
Many Nigerian parents were on Wednesday evening in mourning after a yet-to-be ascertain number of children reportedly lost their lives in a stampede that occurred during a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Wednesday.
The incident happened in the Bashorun area of the city, leaving many injured, with victims rushed to different hospitals for treatment.
Reports indicate that the carnival was planned for Wednesday, but some parents arrived with their children as early as Tuesday, while others came early on the day of the event. The stampede began as crowds rushed to gain entry into the venue, sparking fears of multiple fatalities, mostly among children.
The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed the tragic event. He stated of the Ibadan incident: “A stampede occurred at the private children’s funfair held at Basorun Islamic High School, leading to loss of lives, mostly children, with some others injured in the early hours of today.”
He further explained that the state government quickly sent a rapid response team to manage the situation and ensured victims were taken to various hospitals in Ibadan for medical attention.
Oyelade added, “Parents who are concerned about the whereabouts of their children are urged to check the following medical facilities in Ibadan where children affected were taken for proper medical attention with valid means of identification:
- Patnas Hospital, Basorun
- Western Hospital, Basorun
- Ringroad State Hospital
- Molly Specialist Hospital
- University College Hospital (UCH)”
The exact number of casualties from the Ibadan children funfair has not been confirmed as investigations continue.
