Shocking New Claims Over ‘Fowl Thief’ Sentenced To Death

Former Oyo State Attorney General, Mutalubi Adebayo, has criticized Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for his intervention in a death sentence case of a man allegedly sentenced to death for stealing a fowl.

The case involves Segun Olowookere, who was convicted alongside Sunday Morakinyo for armed robbery. The two were found guilty of forcefully entering the home of a police officer in 2010, stealing his belongings, and were sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Oyejide Falola of the Osun State High Court.

Governor Adeleke had announced an investigation and the start of a pardon process for Olowookere after the convict’s parents claimed in a viral podcast that their son was sentenced to death for stealing a fowl.

In response, Adebayo issued a statement warning against unconstitutional actions that could compromise judicial independence. He emphasized that such actions might put judges at risk, exposing them to threats from criminals and endangering their lives.

“The claim that the prisoner was convicted and sentenced to death for stealing a fowl is an outright falsehood and cheap blackmail, aimed at securing his release through underhanded means,” Adebayo stated. He clarified that Olowookere was part of a notorious gang of armed robbers and was given a fair trial. He added, “There has been no appeal against the judgment in over 14 years.”

While acknowledging the constitutional powers of governors and the president to grant pardons, Adebayo stressed that investigating judicial decisions oversteps constitutional boundaries. He said, “The executive arm lacks such powers. Investigating judges for their decisions constitutes a usurpation of the judiciary’s constitutional role. Judges being harassed online for performing their lawful duties is deeply traumatic, especially when such attacks are rooted in falsehoods and rumours.”

He urged both the public and the government to avoid being swayed by misinformation, which could harm the judiciary and undermine public trust in the justice system.
