Catholics respond to Abel Damina

Apostle Abel Damina has ignited a fierce debate with his controversial remarks about the Catholic Church, with adherents of the Catholic Church hitting back at the pentecostal pastor..

He described Catholics as “Bible illiterates,” accused them of idol worship, and labeled their practice of Holy Communion as “stupid.” Damina also claimed that Catholics are kept ignorant of the Bible by their pastors, leaving them unable to engage in meaningful biblical discussions and overly focused on rituals like the rosary.

Catholics have passionately defended their faith against Damina’s accusations. Many assert that they actively engage with the Bible and follow its teachings closely.

Hubert Akason remarked, “The Catholic Church’s disrespect has to stop. Your church hasn’t even been around for 50 years, yet you think you can criticize a church over 1500 years old?” Others highlighted that the Catholic Church not only contributed to preserving Christianity but also established doctrines that serve as the foundation for modern Christian practice.

Sammy Ugonabo added, “Someone should remind Pastor Damina that the Bible he quotes—even out of context—exists today because of the Catholic Church. Christianity’s survival and values are largely due to the Church’s strong doctrines.”

In response to Damina’s claim about Catholics not reading the Bible, Catholics pointed out their structured approach to Scripture. A Catholic commentator named Jonhvick explained, “The Catholic Church reads the entire Bible in a 3-year cycle during Mass. Every part of the Mass, from the entrance song to the communion rite, is rooted in scripture and the words of Jesus. This includes our prayers, thanksgiving, and petitions.”

He further dismissed Damina’s remarks as baseless, saying, “With his eloquence and confidence, you’d think he’s making sense. Instead, he looks uninformed. He should stick to exposing his fellow pastors because attacking the Catholic Church makes him sound ignorant.”

Some Catholics went beyond defending their practices to critique Nigerian Pentecostal churches. They accused them of eroding Christian values through selective scripture interpretation and sensationalism. “Without the Catholic Church, Christianity would have lost its values. Pentecostal churches contribute more to this decline,” Ugonabo said.

Finding Solace, another Catholic respondent, pointed to an underlying motive, stating, “They spend all their time trying to ‘save’ Catholics. Why not save yourself first? Without the Catholic Church, you’d have no sermon to preach. This obsession is nothing but envy.”

While some non-Catholics acknowledged Damina’s point about Bible knowledge, many dismissed his delivery as divisive. Catholics emphasized the importance of unity among Christians, urging critics to focus on spreading faith rather than attacking established traditions.

This exchange has not only underscored the deep divides within Christianity but also highlighted the Catholic Church’s longstanding influence and commitment to biblical traditions.
