Retired Military Personnel Set Up Camp At Finance Ministry
By Benjamin Abioye
Retired military personnel held a protest at the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, demanding the full payment of their outstanding entitlements.
They gathered outside the ministry, setting up canopies and chairs to block access, causing a disruption to regular operations.
This protest was the second in a series of actions in recent months, following a similar demonstration in December when the retirees also staged a blockade at the ministry due to unresolved claims. Despite receiving official approval for their payments, the government explained that a lack of funds was the reason for the delay.
The retirees are seeking a salary increment of 20% to 28% from January to November 2024, along with several other outstanding benefits. These include palliative payments for the period between October 2023 and November 2024, a ₦32,000 pension increase, a lump sum payment for the Security Debarment Allowance, and a refund for pension deductions from medically discharged soldiers.
In response to the protests in December, the government paid 50% of the owed entitlements, with promises to clear the remaining balance. However, the retirees claim the government has not fulfilled this commitment, which led to their renewed demonstration.
During Tuesday’s protest, the retirees blocked the ministry’s gates with their makeshift setup, halting vehicles from entering. Staff had to park their cars outside the premises, as the protesters refused to leave until their demands were met.
