Lagos Speaker, Obasa Who Troubled Sanwo-Olu Impeached
By Emmanuel Aziken
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached the speaker, Mudashiru Obasa bringing to a possible end the power rival between the former speaker and Governor Babatunde Sanwo-Olu.
GWG.ng reports that Obasa was accused of multiple statutory and financial infractions but the details were not immediately available.
Obasa was impeached early on Monday morning amid a security cordon and subsequently replaced by his deputy Mojisola Meranda who has now become the first female speaker of the House.
Mrs Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was also a former chief whip of the house.
Mojeed Fatai is now the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Obsaa has been engulfed in a series of controversial circumstances in terms of financial dealings.
The removal comes barely a month after Obasa was accused of allegedly spending N17 billion to fix a gate that leads to the assembly.
GWG.ng reports that supporters of the speaker from his Agege constituency who stormed the House of Assembly to protest the move against him were seen on television packed into a police detention van popularly called Black Maria.
GWG.ng reports that the power rivalry with Sanwo-Olu reached a climax last November when Obasa speaking about his famous governorship ambition said that those who have become governor were not better than him.
