Speed Darlington Granted Bail

Nigerian singer Darlington Achakpo, known as Speed Darlington, has been formally arraigned in court and granted bail.

His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, shared this update on X after the court appearance on Wednesday.

Adeyanju wrote, “Police finally arraigns Speed Darlington in court. Bail application moved and granted. We are trying to perfect same.” This statement suggests that efforts to finalize Darlington’s bail are ongoing following his appearance.

The legal issue arose after Speed Darlington’s legal team filed a petition with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Bureau, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi. The petition was to ensure the police complied with a court order concerning his detention.

The singer’s lawyer, Rosemary E. Hamza, from the Chambers of Deji Adeyanju & Partners, emphasized that a court order issued on December 23, 2024, by Justice M.S. Liman directed the police to either charge Darlington within 48 hours or release him.

Speed Darlington’s legal issues started in October 2024, when he was arrested for allegedly defaming and cyberstalking Burna Boy. Initially detained in Lagos, he was later transferred to Abuja, where he was held by the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team. After being released, he was re-arrested in November while performing in Owerri, Imo State, shortly after returning to Nigeria.
