Ekiti Governor on Sharia Court

The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has stated that the reports of Sharia arbitration being practiced in the state are completely false.

In response to a viral video circulating on social media last week, the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dayo Apata (SAN), clarified the judicial structure of Ekiti State. “Ekiti State’s judicial framework consists of Customary Courts, the Customary Court of Appeal, and the High Court,” he explained, addressing the false claims.

He emphasized that the state does not have a Sharia Court or an Independent Sharia Arbitration Panel. Apata said, “All matters relating to Islamic, Christian, and traditional marriages, as well as inheritance, are effectively handled by recognized courts in the state without conflict.”

He further drew a comparison, noting, “Sharia Courts in northern Nigeria are equivalent to Customary Courts in the southern states, including Ekiti, where appeals proceed to the Customary Court of Appeal.” Apata also pointed out that Ekiti’s High Court and other judicial bodies include mechanisms for arbitration and mediation to resolve disputes.

Apata urged caution when discussing sensitive religious matters and warned that any actions that could disrupt the state’s peaceful coexistence would not be tolerated. “We have zero tolerance for any action capable of undermining harmony among our residents, and we are ready to enforce the law to uphold peace,” he added.
