Presidency Criticizes El-Rufai Over Democracy Comments

The Presidency has criticized former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for his recent remarks on the state of democracy in the country.

The Presidency has rebuked erstwhile governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai over his claim that democracy in Nigeria is endangered.

Speaking at a national conference in Abuja on Monday, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the party had failed to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.

“I no longer recognize the APC. No party organ has met in two years—no caucus, no NEC, nothing. You don’t even know if it is a one-man show; it’s a zero-man show,” El-Rufai said. He further noted that the gap between the APC and its founding principles had widened, adding that the party had strayed from its original mission and could no longer deliver on its commitments to the people.

El-Rufai also blamed the country’s hardships on unqualified individuals holding positions of authority, describing them as “illiterates and semi-illiterates.”

In response, Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, accused El-Rufai of attempting to undermine the government he once helped establish. Reacting to El-Rufai’s statements on his X handle, Bwala questioned whether the former governor would have made similar comments if he were part of the current administration.

“My senior brother, if you were to be in the government and cabinet, would you have held and expressed the same position? History is replete with examples. It is a government you participated in its formation, that you now want to unseat,” Bwala wrote.
