Selena Gomez Responds To US Deportation Threat
By Benjamin Abioye

Selena Gomez has responded to a politician who suggested she should be “deported” after sharing a tearful video expressing concern over recent immigration crackdowns and deportations.
American singer Selena Gomez has reacted to a politician’s criticism after sharing a video of herself crying over recent threats of deportation of illegal immigrants in the U.S.
In the now-deleted video, posted on her Instagram Stories, showed Selena Gomez, whose paternal grandparents immigrated from Mexico, visibly upset about the mass deportations carried out by the Trump administration. “My people are getting attacked,” she said through tears, expressing her concern for the situation.
In the emotional video, Gomez said, “I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” While Instagram Stories typically disappear after 24 hours, the video was removed after backlash. Gomez also posted, then deleted, a statement that read, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”
Sam Parker, a politician who ran for U.S. Senate in Utah in 2018, criticized Gomez on X (formerly Twitter), accusing her of prioritizing undocumented immigrants over Americans, based on her family’s immigration history. “She has an entitlement attitude toward America, like her illegal g’parents. Maybe Selena should be deported, too?” Parker wrote, later quoting his post simply saying, “Deport Selena Gomez.”
In response, Selena Gomez wrote on Instagram, “Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker, Thanks for the laugh and the threat,” before deleting her post.
The recent immigration raids, ordered by President Donald Trump, resulted in nearly 1,200 arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a single day. While being undocumented is a civil offense, re-entering the U.S. after being deported is considered a crime.
Gomez’s video received mixed reactions online. While some criticized her for feeling helpless despite her celebrity status, others defended her for speaking out during the raids. TV personality Geraldo Rivera, a former Trump supporter, praised Gomez, writing, “Selena Gomez should be commended for her compassion and sincerity. People attacking her on social media should be ashamed.”
As a producer of the 2019 Netflix series Living Undocumented, Selena Gomez has long been an advocate for immigrant rights. In a 2019 editorial for Time magazine, she shared her family’s immigration story, explaining how her aunt crossed the border hidden in the back of a truck, and later, her grandparents followed. Gomez emphasized that her father, born in Texas, became a U.S. citizen by birthright.
“Over the past four decades, members of my family have worked hard to gain United States citizenship,” Selena Gomez wrote to counter the deportation narrative.
Reflecting on the fear and uncertainty that her family faced as immigrants, Gomez added, “The worst criticism I can imagine is still nothing compared to what undocumented immigrants face every day.” She urged people to get involved and educate themselves on the issue, stating, “Fear shouldn’t stop us from getting involved and educating ourselves on an issue that affects millions of people in our country.”
