GAC Allegedly Seeking New Speaker For Lagos Assembly
By Gideon Ayeni

A fresh twist has emerged in the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership crisis, as the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) is set to meet Monday to nominate three lawmakers from Lagos West Senatorial District to replace Hon Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.
According to sources, the election of Hon. Mojisola Meranda as Speaker following Obasa’s impeachment on January 13 has not been well received by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Recall that 32 out of the 40 Assembly members voted to remove Obasa over allegations of fraud and high-handedness, installing Meranda as his successor. However, despite speculations about a possible reinstatement, fresh reports confirm that Obasa’s removal remains final and irreversible.
Under the new plan as ennvisaged by the GAC Meranda is expected to step down from her current position as Speaker and return to her former role as Deputy Speaker. The GAC is now focused on selecting a new Speaker from Lagos West Senatorial District to maintain regional balance.
At present, eight ranking lawmakers from Lagos West are being considered for the position:
Hon. Setonji David (Badagry 2)
Hon. Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1)
Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1)
Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2)
Hon. Lukmon Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1)
Hon. Age Sulaimon (Amuwo-Odofin 2)
Hon. Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2)
Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 2)
From this list, the GAC will nominate three candidates, one of whom will ultimately be elected as the next Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
