In a Facebook post, Ugwuonye disclosed that the latest court proceedings focused on a Compulsory Conference, a mandatory process under Nigerian family law. This procedure requires both parties in a divorce case to meet alongside their legal representatives in an attempt to resolve some or all of the contested issues before trial.

According to the lawyer, the previous court session revealed that May and Yul had not submitted their conference report, suggesting that their initial discussions were inconclusive. As a result, the court granted them additional time to conduct another round of virtual meetings to attempt a resolution.

Providing more details, Ugwuonye explained:

“The court held a hearing on the case today. The issue before the court was the report of the compulsory conference ordered for both parties.

A compulsory conference is part of the family law procedure under Nigerian law. When a couple files for divorce, the court directs them and their lawyers to hold discussions aimed at reaching agreements on certain contested issues, such as the division of marital property. If they succeed, their agreement is presented to the court; if not, the court decides on the next steps.”

The lawyer further stated that since May and Yul had not reached an agreement, the court scheduled another session for March. At the next hearing, the judge expects either a final report on resolved matters or confirmation that both parties failed to reach any consensus. This will determine how the trial proceeds.

Ugwuonye also clarified Judy Austin’s involvement in the case, stating that she is being accused of adultery and falsely claiming to be married to Yul Edochie despite his legal marriage to May.

The case remains ongoing, with the next court hearing set for March.
