FIFA Suspend Pakistan, Congo Ahead Of 2026 World Cup
By Benjamin Abioye

FIFA has suspended the football federations of Pakistan and Congo ahead of the 2026 World Cup, citing serious governance issues and third-party interference, adding to Russia’s ban.
FIFA has announced the suspension of the football federations of Pakistan and Congo ahead of the 2026 World Cup, set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
These suspensions add to the existing ban on Russia, meaning three countries are currently barred from international competitions.
Russia has been suspended since 2022 due to its invasion of Ukraine, with both FIFA and UEFA maintaining this ban. FIFA has now extended its disciplinary actions to Pakistan and Congo, citing “serious circumstances.”
Congo’s suspension stems from alleged third-party interference in its football federation, which violates FIFA regulations. A FIFA statement explained, “FECOFOOT has been suspended with immediate effect due to a particularly serious situation of undue interference by third parties in the affairs of the organization, which constitutes a clear violation of FECOFOOT’s obligations in accordance with the FIFA Statutes.” FIFA, along with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), conducted two investigative missions in Brazzaville before making this decision. However, Congo’s suspension could be lifted if the federation restores full control of its headquarters and facilities before the 2026 World Cup.
Pakistan’s suspension is due to constitutional violations. The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) failed to implement a revised constitution that would ensure fair and democratic elections within the governing body. FIFA had previously sanctioned the PFF in 2017 and 2021 for similar issues. In its latest statement, FIFA said, “The suspension will only be lifted subject to the PFF Congress approving the version of the PFF Constitution presented by FIFA and the AFC.”
Pakistan’s previous suspension was lifted in June 2022 after the federation regained control of its premises and financial operations. However, the lack of necessary governance reforms led to this renewed FIFA intervention.
As for the impact on World Cup qualifications, Congo is at the bottom of Group E in the CAF World Cup qualification standings, leaving them with minimal chances of qualifying for the 2026 tournament.
Pakistan, having completed its AFC qualification campaign, finished last in Group G under coach Stephen Constantine.
