OSIEC denied journalists accreditation

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) did not accredit journalists for the local government elections taking place today.

Earlier, the commission’s Information Officer, Sadiat Isiaka, had announced that only journalists and observers with official accreditation, tags, and jackets from OSIEC would be allowed access to voting areas, collation centers, and other key locations.

She warned, “Any unauthorized media or observer team without an authorization letter, the official jackets, and tags of the Commission will be treated as an impostor.”

Despite multiple attempts, journalists from various print and broadcast media under the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) were unable to secure accreditation.

Shina Abubakar, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, confirmed that OSIEC did not grant accreditation to journalists covering the election.

This situation has raised concerns about transparency and access to information regarding the electoral process in Osun State.

Meanwhile, Governor Ademola Adeleke participated in the election by casting his vote.

Speaking with journalists after voting, he described the process as peaceful and encouraged citizens to exercise their right to vote calmly.

“The process has been very peaceful. I made a broadcast to my good people of Osun State that this election should be peaceful. They should come out and cast their votes and go home peacefully. We should not give them any chance to say there is violence there or there,” he stated.

Governor Adeleke urged residents to turn out, vote, and return home without causing any disturbances.
