Shocking Video Reveals Detergent Being Used To Process Fufu
By Benjamin Abioye

A disturbing revelation has sparked outrage after farmers in Rivers State admitted to adding detergent to cassava during fufu processing.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the farmers openly explained that the practice helps speed up fermentation, cutting down processing time from over a week to just a few days.
In the clip, one of the farmers demonstrated the difference between natural and detergent-treated cassava. “This is the one we soaked last night, and there is detergent in this one,” she said, pointing at the foaming mixture. “That’s why it’s bringing out this foam… it will soften in just four days. But this one, which has no detergent, will take up to eight days.” Holding up a packet, she added, “This is the detergent we use. Just this. No other one.”
Another farmer backed up the claim, saying, “I don’t soak this one before, I didn’t put detergent and water. And the thing no med, I carry engine grinder and put it back. After four days now, I will filter this one and use it and make it normal.”
The video has sent shockwaves across social media, with many Nigerians expressing fear, anger, and disbelief.
“Omg!!! I’m never eating fufu outside anymore,”* @BigBugzyy tweeted in horror. @TVNDEY linked it to greed, saying, “The problem still borders on lack of patience. Poisoning people just to make a quick sale.”
Some users were not entirely surprised, with @charliebeato recalling another troubling food practice: “The same way Mama Puts have made paracetamol expensive. They use it to soften Kokomo.”
Others were simply in shock. “So nothing is safe anymore?” asked @DaddyJeeHoe, while @maddybwilliams reacted with a disgusted “You say? ”
Beyond the shock, many are calling for strict action against such practices. @anasuachara didn’t mince words: “What a ridiculous and naive justification of this unwholesome act. They should be arrested and charged for murder.”
Food safety concerns have long been a major issue in Nigeria, and this revelation has only deepened public mistrust. @aco_mayana summed up the frustration: “This is why there are so many health issues in the country. Why una go add detergent for fufu?? ”
With the conversation growing louder, many are urging food regulatory bodies to step in before this harmful practice spreads further. In the meantime, some Nigerians have made their own decisions about their diets. “Best option: get your foodstuffs from your own farm, learn to process them,” advised @ofijake_.
