Onitsha Leaders Justice Azuka

The Onitsha community has condemned the brutal murder of Hon. Justice Azuka and called for justice, accountability, and a transparent investigation.

The Onitsha indigenous community has expressed outrage over the brutal murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, the lawmaker who represented Onitsha North Constituency 1 at the Anambra State House of Assembly.

The community is demanding transparency, accountability, and swift justice, while also raising serious concerns about the investigation into his death.

In a statement issued after a town hall meeting held on February 27, 2025, the community questioned several aspects of the case, including the timeline of Hon. Azuka’s death, the freezing of his bank account while in captivity, and the circumstances surrounding the escape of two suspects from police custody.

The Onitsha community described the handling of the case as unsatisfactory and is calling on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to take over the investigation from the Anambra State Police Command.

The demands were made during an open town hall meeting presided over by His Majesty, Nnaemeka A. Achebe, CFR, mni, Obi of Onitsha. The meeting, attended by hundreds of indigenes and followed electronically by Onitsha citizens in the diaspora, served as a platform for the community to express their dissatisfaction with the investigation.

According to the statement, the community is also urging the Anambra State Government to take decisive action to restore public confidence in its security strategy. Furthermore, they announced plans to review their local security system in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and the state government to prevent future incidents.

Hon. Justice Azuka was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas along Ugwunaobankpa Road, Onitsha. Despite multiple assurances from law enforcement agencies and the state government that efforts were being made to secure his release, his decomposing body was discovered on February 6, 2025, near the Second Niger Bridge.

The Onitsha community expressed deep disappointment over conflicting statements from the police and the state government regarding the case. A key issue raised was the withdrawal of N100 million from Hon. Azuka’s bank account while he was still in captivity. Additionally, the escape of two key suspects from police custody has further fueled suspicions of foul play and incompetence in handling the investigation.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Chief Osita Anionwu, Ike Akatakwuani of Onitsha and Chief of Staff at Ime Obi Onitsha, reaffirmed their commitment to seeking justice and holding those responsible accountable.

“We cannot allow this tragedy to be swept under the carpet. The Onitsha indigenous community will continue to demand justice for Hon. Justice Azuka and will not rest until the truth is uncovered,” he said.

To ensure justice is served, the Onitsha community has also sent an open letter to Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, and Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, outlining their concerns and demands regarding the investigation.
