How Nigeria’s Flamingos Again Humbled South Africa’s Bantwana
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, have progressed to the final round of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers after defeating South Africa’s Bantwana 2-0 in the second leg.
With this result, Nigeria secured a 5-1 aggregate win in the penultimate round of the qualification series.
Harmony Chidi, who scored twice in the first leg, added to her tally in the 37th minute. She expertly nodded in a well-placed cross from a difficult angle, making it even harder for the South Africans, who had already lost the first leg 1-3 at home.
Shakirat Moshood, who was also on the scoresheet in the first leg, played a key role in both of Nigeria’s goals. She delivered a precise free kick from the right, which led to Chidi’s opener. Eleven minutes into the second half, Moshood set up Aishat Animashaun, who skillfully chipped the ball over South African goalkeeper Samekelise Mthembu to seal Nigeria’s victory.
Despite strong performances from Zoe October, Thoriso Mphelo, Khmezi Khoza, and team captain Katleho Malebana, the Bantwana struggled to break through Nigeria’s solid defense. The defensive line, consisting of Hannah Ibrahim, Jumai Adebayo, Philomena Isaiah, and Favour Iheagwam, remained firm throughout the match.
With this win, the Flamingos advance to the final round of the qualification series, where they will face the winner between Botswana and Algeria next month.
