Quadri Aruna Becomes Africa’s Top-Ranked Table Tennis Player
By Benjamin Abioye

Nigerian table tennis star Quadri Aruna has overtaken Egypt’s Omar Assar to become the highest-ranked African player in the world.
According to the latest rankings released on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, Quadri Aruna climbed to 18th place in the world helped by some of his latest outings.
Aruna’s Consistency Pays Off
Despite finishing second at the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup, Quadri Aruna’s strong performances in WTT tournaments this year helped him rise in the rankings. His success at the WTT Contender Doha, where he reached the semifinals once again, played a key role in his ranking boost.
While Assar won the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup, his ranking dropped, allowing Aruna to move ahead. Aruna jumped from 19th in Week 11 to 18th, while Assar fell from 17th to 19th. Denmark’s Jonathan Groth took Assar’s former spot at 17th.
Other African Players in the Rankings
Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali, despite being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2025 ITTF Africa Cup, improved his ranking to 45th, making him the third-best African player in the world.
In the women’s category, Egypt’s Hana Goda remained the highest-ranked African female player. She moved up one spot to 26th in the latest rankings. Another Egyptian, Dina Meshref, stayed at 33rd, keeping her position as the second-best-ranked female player in Africa.
China Leads the Global Rankings
China continues to dominate the global table tennis scene. Wang Chuqin held onto his No. 2 spot, just behind fellow Chinese player Lin Shidong, who remains the top-ranked player. Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto moved up to third place, surpassing China’s Liang Jingkun.
In the women’s rankings, China’s Sun Yingsha maintained her No. 1 position after successfully defending her WTT Champions Chongqing title. The top five female players in the world remained unchanged.
