Na Your Mama: Kudos, Small Knock Trail Remi Tinubu’s Response
By Gideon Ayeni

Netizens have weighed in on First Lady Remi Tinubu’s response to the viral video of nursing students in Delta State playfully rejecting her as “mother of the nation.”
While some praised her for addressing the issue with grace, others felt she should have ignored it completely, arguing that responding only gave the situation more attention.
A section of online users commended her statement, describing it as a mature and motherly approach that diffused tensions rather than escalating them. They argued that her acknowledgment of the students’ excitement and playfulness was a sign of leadership.
However, others slammed the press release, questioning why the First Lady’s office had to react to a lighthearted moment. Critics also pointed out that there is no constitutional backing for the “Office of the First Lady,” dismissing the response as unnecessary.
The debate over the incident continues, with some insisting that the nursing students’ actions were harmless, while others believe the reaction from Mrs. Tinubu’s team was an attempt to maintain dignity in the face of public scrutiny.

@Rotle03819: Good one from the First Lady..Iya daada.
@oyiboediri: What does this part of the statement mean?”…handle this matter with understanding and FAIRNESS, ensuring that students continue to thrive in an environment that balances discipline with free expression”.
@gbuej: There’s nothing like office of the first lady in the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. Moreover, the students were not playing any jokes they were saying their minds. #NaYourMama no be our mama she be
@gracious: There was no need for a statement…..ignoring would have been better
GWG.ng reports that the incident occurred on March 25, 2025, at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, where Mrs. Tinubu was attending the Renewed Hope Initiative event. The program was aimed at donating 10,000 professional kits to midwives in the South-South zone to support their efforts in reducing maternal and infant mortality in Nigeria.
During the event, students from the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, were seen responding to a song led by the event’s Master of Ceremony, who referred to Mrs. Tinubu as the “mother of the nation.” However, the students playfully altered the lyrics, suggesting she was not their mother.
The lighthearted chant quickly gained traction online, sparking mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some found it humorous, others debated whether it was disrespectful.
In reaction to the viral clip, Mrs. Tinubu’s media aide, Busola Kukoyi, released a statement emphasizing that the First Lady appreciated the warm reception from the Delta State government, healthcare workers, and nursing students.
The statement described the students’ response as an expression of excitement, acknowledging that such moments of spontaneity are common during large public gatherings. It further reiterated that the visit’s primary goal was to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals in their critical role of reducing maternal and infant deaths.
