Man celebrate freedom 29 years prison

A man who recently regained his freedom after spending 29 years in a Lagos prison has shared his experience, expressing both joy and deep reflection on life behind bars.

Sitting in a commercial bus, he celebrated his release from the Lagos prison with a sachet of gin, revealing that the same drink, which costs between 200 to 400 Naira outside, was being sold for a staggering 2,500 Naira inside the prison. He narrated his ordeal in a tone of relief, emphasizing how difficult prison life was.

According to him, a human rights lawyer stood by his side for 11 years, tirelessly fighting his case until he was finally discharged. He expressed immense gratitude to the lawyer, acknowledging the effort that led to his freedom.

However, when asked what led to his imprisonment, he refused to disclose the details, instead focusing on how dangerous and inhumane prison conditions were. He claimed that every day, multiple dead bodies were removed from the prison, mentioning figures such as 15, 11, and 12 inmates losing their lives regularly.

He also described the extreme overcrowding in the facility. While the prison’s original capacity was meant to hold 800 inmates, he stated that it currently houses far more.

His release and emotional reaction have sparked a wave of responses on social media, with many users reacting to his experience and the state of the prison system. One user, @Kckingson, wrote, “Be grateful for life even when there’s no money because many dudes don’t even have the freedom to chase money.” Another, @DestinyTravis, added, “Ahhhh this freedom needs to be celebrated as long as he doesn’t go back in.”

Others expressed concern about how he would adjust to the outside world after nearly three decades behind bars in the Lagos prison. @Grind_Charts tweeted, “29 years? Omo, the world wey e leave and the one wey e return to no be the same. First thing wey go shock am na fuel price.” Similarly, @TimmyTalkingTrumpet remarked, “This Omo statement don tey oo.. but him no gree talk wetin him do ooo.. if you know you know.”

Meanwhile, @FowoweKayode pointed out the alarming state of Nigeria’s prison system, stating, “Maximum prison of 800 inmates now holds 79,832 inmates… hmmmm, what a Nigeria.”

Despite the horrors of his past, the man remains in high spirits, embracing his newfound freedom. As he adjusts to life outside, many wonder how he will cope with the vastly different world he has re-entered.
