Nwifuru Arrests Six Commissioners

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has arrested six commissioners over their alleged involvement in the mishandling of a housing project meant for the Izzo and Amaze communities.

The arrested commissioners include Professor Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), Ifeanyi Ogbuewu (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Moses Ekuma (Health), and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring).

Also suspended is Timothy Nwachi, the Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area. Prior to their arrests, the state government had issued a wanted notice for the commissioners involved.

Governor Nwifuru, through Ilang Donatus, Chairman of the State Executive Council Committee on the Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, stated that the commissioners and contractors had failed to fulfill their contractual obligations. The housing units were planned as part of the Governor’s initiative to mark his two-year anniversary in office, but the project’s slow progress has led to frustration.

Donatus said, “The governor is not happy over the pace of the work which ought to have been completed. The government has decided to clamp down on the contractors and commissioners who were mandated to supervise those projects.”

He further emphasized the Governor’s commitment to providing relief to victims of communal crises, explaining, “Our governor is a man with a passionate heart, he likes giving succour, hence the building of those houses for the victims of the communal crisis. He is not happy that the project is delayed and has ordered the arrest of all the commissioners who were supposed to ensure the speedy completion of the housing units.”

Maria Okohu, Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilization for Ebonyi Central, also criticized the failure of contractors to complete their work and the lack of proper supervision by some commissioners. “The failure of contractors to complete projects and the lack of strict supervision by certain commissioners, as mandated by the government, constitute an act of sabotage,” she stated.

The Governor has made it clear that the arrests will continue until all involved commissioners and contractors are held accountable. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police have sent invitations to several commissioners and contractors who were not available when the committee visited them.
