Obi Nigeria Democracy

Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, has raised concerns about the state of democracy in Nigeria, questioning its true democratic nature.

In a no-holds-barred interview with Arise TV, the former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate declared that Nigeria is not truly a democratic nation.

“If democracy is defined as government of the people, by the people, and for the people, then tell me—does that exist in Nigeria today?” Obi questioned.

Obi, who ran a fiercely contested election against the ruling party in 2023, has been a strong critic of Nigeria’s electoral process and governance system. He stated that democracy cannot thrive when elections are marred by irregularities, institutions lack independence, and leaders prioritize their personal comfort over national development.

One of his key criticisms was the government’s allocation of resources. He highlighted the approval of N21 billion for the renovation of the Vice President’s residence in Abuja while millions of Nigerians live in extreme poverty.

“How can a government justify spending N21 billion on renovating a house while children in IDP camps do not even have access to a basic school?” Obi asked.

He argued that such spending priorities expose the disconnect between the government and the suffering masses.

According to Obi, Nigeria’s leadership structure still operates in a manner that prioritizes a few elites rather than the collective will of the people. He emphasized that a truly democratic system would ensure that public funds are used to improve the lives of citizens, not for unnecessary luxury.

“Until governance is truly by and for the people, Nigeria will continue to struggle with systemic failures,” he warned.

His remarks have sparked renewed conversations about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, with many agreeing that the country must undergo fundamental reforms to align with true democratic principles.
