UEFA Sanctions Mbappe, Rudiger After UCL Win
By Benjamin Abioye

Real Madrid stars Kylian Mbappe and Antonio Rudiger have found themselves in hot water with UEFA following their controversial celebrations after a high-stakes Champions League clash.
The disciplinary body announced on Friday that both players have been handed a suspended one-game ban for violating its “basic rules of decent conduct.” The suspension, though not immediate, will remain in effect for a year. Any repeat of such behaviour within that period will trigger the ban automatically.
The sanctions stem from Real Madrid’s intense Champions League round of 16 victory over Atletico Madrid on March 12. After the nail-biting penalty shootout at the Wanda Metropolitano, Mbappe’s actions on the pitch—particularly a gesture where he grabbed his crotch—sparked outrage and criticism online.
UEFA also imposed financial penalties: Rudiger was fined €40,000, Mbappe €30,000, and Dani Ceballos €20,000. Only Ceballos avoided a suspended ban. Meanwhile, Vinicius Junior, who was initially under review, faced no charges.
Mbappe later offered an explanation, saying, “It wasn’t meant to offend anyone. I got caught up in the excitement of the moment.”
As the dust settles, Real Madrid now turn their attention to the upcoming quarter-final showdown against Arsenal. With pressure mounting and stakes higher than ever, the Spanish giants will hope to leave the controversy behind and stay focused on their pursuit of European glory.
