Outrage As Peter Obi’s Iconic Lagos Campaign Boy Lands In Kirikiri

Widespread concern has erupted on social media following reports that Yusuf Alabi, the boy famously seen standing in front of Peter Obi’s campaign vehicle during the 2023 presidential rally in Lagos, is currently being held in Kirikiri Prison.

Yusuf Alabi, who became a national symbol of courage and hope during the 2023 elections after his viral encounter with Obi, is now facing charges of theft and street fighting—allegations many say are baseless and politically motivated.

According to several reports shared by social media users , Yusuf Alabi was reportedly on his way home from work when some neighborhood thugs (popularly called “egbon adugbo”) stopped him, seized his phone, and handed him over to the police. They allegedly accused him of being a known troublemaker and a thief in the area.

Insiders claim that Yusuf immediately recognized all those who falsely accused him, suggesting that the incident may be a setup. Sources close to the situation believe the action was driven by jealousy and bitterness after Yusuf received cash gifts and public attention following his viral moment with Peter Obi and later, a meeting with nightlife entrepreneur Cubana Chief Priest.

“The area boys were angry that Yusuf’s family didn’t ‘settle’ them from the goodwill money and donations he got last year. This is all payback,” supporters said online.

Many maintain that Yusuf Alabi is innocent and is being victimized by his community. The young man reportedly made his first court appearance on March 27, with another hearing scheduled for April 28.

So far, the police and other relevant authorities have not issued an official statement regarding Yusuf Alabi’s Kirikiri detention. However, the issue has sparked widespread outrage on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), with many calling for his immediate release and proper legal intervention.
