Nigeria’s football community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Christian Chukwu Okoro, a former captain and coach of the national team. He passed away at the age of 74.

    In 1980, Chukwu captained the then Green Eagles to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title, sealing a historic 3-0 win over Algeria in the final played in Lagos.
  3. A legend at Enugu Rangers
    Chukwu spent his entire senior club career at Enugu Rangers from 1972 to 1981. He played a pivotal role in the club’s golden years and is remembered as one of its greatest ever players.
  4. 54 appearances for Nigeria
    Between 1974 and 1981, he earned 54 caps and scored five goals for the national team, showcasing leadership and consistency throughout his international career.
  5. A globetrotting coach
    After retiring as a player, Chukwu turned to coaching and handled top teams including Enugu Rangers, Nigeria’s U17 and senior national teams, and even the Kenyan national team in the late 1990s.
  6. Took Nigeria to 2004 AFCON semifinals
    As head coach of the Super Eagles between 2003 and 2005, Chukwu led the team to the semifinals of the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, earning commendation for his tactical approach.

    In 2019, he faced a serious health challenge. Thanks to interventions from the Nigerian Football Federation and philanthropist Femi Otedola, he received treatment in the United States and made a successful recovery.
