Chief Magistrate Pokes Rivers Administrator, I Can’t Serve You!
By Benjamin Abioye

Rivers State Chief Magistrate Ejike George has resigned, citing discomfort with the state’s recent shift to a “quasi-military” leadership, which he believes undermines democratic values.
A Chief Magistrate in Rivers State, Ejike King George, has officially stepped down from his position, expressing strong disagreement with the current leadership in the state.
In a resignation letter dated April 11, 2025, addressed to the Chief Judge of Rivers State through the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission, he explained the reasons for his decision.
George said his resignation was due to discomfort with what he described as the recent appointment of a “quasi-military administration” in the state. He stated, “This difficult and regrettable decision is informed largely by my discomfort with the recent appointment of a quasi-military administration to run the affairs of a modern State like ours.”
He emphasized that the current leadership style does not align with the values of the legal system, calling it “alien” and “antithetical” to the principles of law and justice.
Having practiced law for 22 years, and spending 16 of those as a Magistrate in Rivers State, George noted that he had served under different democratic governments. His resignation adds to ongoing concerns and tensions within the political and judicial environment of the state.
George also shared that continuing in office under the current conditions would amount to silent approval, which he could not allow. According to him, doing so would reflect “tacit and naïve acquiescence.”
The Chief Magistrate ended his letter with appreciation for the opportunity to serve Rivers State, saying, “Thanks, Milord, for the opportunity to serve.”
