By Emmanuel Aziken

Kelina Hospital has marked the 6,000th surgical operation with a call to Nigerians to take opportunity of its state-of-the-art equipment and renowned medical experts in relieving themselves of the huge cost and complications in resorting to foreign medical treatment.
Dr Celsus Undie, Consultant Urologist, led other medical experts and support staff to address the press on the hospital’s leading exploits in prostate surgery, among others on Friday in Lagos.
Also present were Dr Bertin Njinou, Consultant Urologist, Dr Vincent Obwuru, Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Aniedi Dick, Consultant, Anaesthetist, Erica Idoko, Corporate Relations Manager, Akor Emmanuel, IT Specialist and Idoko Anthony, Head of operations.

Noting the hospital’s strides it was disclosed that the hospital presently conducts more than 100 prostate surgeries per year. Even more, it was further disclosed that the hospital had has as at April 2025 conducted 500 of the highly technical Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeries in 6 years.
Remarkably, HoLEP surgery which is done to ease urine flow in cases of enlarged prostrate was first done in Nigeria by Kelina Hospital.
Giving more details of the strides of Kelina Hospital operating from Lagos at No 7, Ologun Agbaje Street, Off Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, and in Abuja at 3rd Avenue, By 34 Crescent, Gwarinpa, the team while noting the hospital’s increasing reputation as a centre of excellence in prostrate surgery particularly noted exploits in the specialised surgical procedure known as Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP). HoLEP it was disclosed is easily the most common surgery done in Kelina Hospital.

As at April 2025, Kelina Hospital had conducted 500 Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) surgeries in 6 years.
“Kelina was the first hospital to do HoLEP in Nigeria. This started at the end of 2018. HoLEP is done for enlarged prostate obstructing urine flow. If obstruction is significant and is not relieved, it could damage the kidney, amongst other damages it could cause, some of them life-threatening. HoLEP is superior to TURP or Open Prostate surgery as patients lose less blood, spend less time on catheters, spend less time on hospital admission, recover faster, and return to work earlier.
“The American Urological Association and the European Association of Urology both recommend HoLEP as the best for prostates that are more than 80 to 100g in size. Patients who cannot pass urine and are catheterized are advised never to carry their catheters for several weeks before prostate surgery, as this causes a lot of complications, including infection.”

Kelina Hospital was also the first hospital in Nigeria to conduct the Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (keyhole surgery) for prostate cancer in 2012.
“The first 2 surgeries were done by Dr Mahesh Desai, President of the World Association of Urological Surgeons (SIU), who visited Kelina Hospital that year. In 2024, Kelina Hospital did 54 of these surgeries, all successfully. Most patients have their meals the same day, within a few hours of surgery. Additionally, the blood transfusion rate in 2024 was only one in 10 patients. The first 2 patients of 2012 have been cancer-free since their surgery was done.”
Kelina Hospital which presently has a Robotic Surgeon in its service is now aiming to add Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) to Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy to its procedures on prostrate surgery.
In addition to its increasing global acclaim in prostrate surgery, Kelina Hospital also conducts Minimally Invasive Surgery for Kidney Stones. In 2011, Kelina did the first Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and Laser Lithotripsy for Kidney stones in Nigeria.
