Silence From LUTH As Netizens Allege Negligence In Patient’s Death
By Gideon Ayeni

A Nigerian man has recounted a deeply disturbing incident of alleged medical negligence at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where a fellow patient reportedly died from suffocation after being improperly fed.
The account, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @LaceVine, has created outrage online and renewed concerns about patient care in public hospitals like LUTH.
According to @LaceVine, the patient in the adjacent hospital bed lost his life after a nurse allegedly instructed his wife to feed him, despite standing medical orders that he was not to receive food orally. The woman reportedly gave her husband pap, a local cornmeal meal, shortly after which he began to struggle to breathe.
“The wife called the nurse for help, but she ignored her for about ten minutes, complaining and grumbling,” @LaceVine wrote. “When she eventually realized it was serious, they started looking for a suction catheter, but none was available. The man died right in front of me.”
He further alleged that, upon the patient’s death, all nurses on duty, including the matron, quickly changed out of their uniforms and went into hiding before the deceased’s family arrived at the hospital.
The harrowing post quickly went viral, with many Nigerians expressing anger in the comments. Some users shared similar stories of neglect and unprofessionalism in public health facilities, while others called for an investigation into the matter.

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital has yet to issue an official response regarding the incident at the time of this report.
However, this ugly development comes barely 24 hours after we reported that grieving family members staged a protest, accusing the hospital of refusing to release the corpse of their late brother over an alleged outstanding bill of N1.9 million.
In a video circulating widely on social media, a woman believed to be the deceased’s sister was seen speaking in anguish outside the hospital premises.
She alleged that despite paying substantial sums daily during her brother’s treatment, LUTH is now demanding an additional N1.9 million before releasing his corpse.
