A plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad, India, prompting global shock and emergency response efforts.
A London bound plane crashed on Thursday morning as an Air India plane went down bringing new questions on air safety in India.
The aircraft, carrying 242 passengers and crew members, went down shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat, India.
The flight, known as Air India 171, was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. According to early reports, it lost control only minutes after leaving the runway and crashed in the Meghani area of the city.
People nearby saw thick smoke rising from the crash site. Photos and videos shared on social media showed a large trail of dark smoke near the international airport.
The reason for the crash is still unknown. Emergency teams are rushing to the scene to begin rescue and recovery efforts.
Air India posted a short message online, saying: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
The event has caused sadness and shock among many people online. Reactions from around the world have been pouring in.
