Dr  Ominimini Obiuwevbi, National Chairman, Urhobo Oil And Gas Nationality (UROAGAN) has called for the reconstitution of the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Plc, NNPC to allow the appointment of an Urhobo as an executive director towards addressing the marginalization of the ethnic nationality in the Nigerian federation.

Speaking on an Arise News Television interview on Tuesday, Obiuwevbi said that the marginalization of the Urhobo was despite the contribution of the ethnic nationality to Nigeria’s oil and gas output. He said that Urhobo land contributes at least 40% of the oil and gas output of Delta State which he said was more than the combined contribution of Imo and Edo States.

He said that of the more than 50 executive directors in the petroleum sector that at least 36 were from the North whereas only 16 are from the South.

“We are calling on President Tinubu to dissolve the NNPC board and reconstitute it with an Urhobo man as a member of the board of NNPC because we produce oil and gas in large quantum,” Obiuwevbi said.

Besides restructuring the NNPC board, Obiuwevbi also noted the lack of Urhobo blood in the yearly scholarship awards by the Petroleum Training and Development Fund, PTDF.

“We are also calling on the PTDF to ensure that in their annual training and scholarships that the Urhobo that produce oil and gas should also be included.

“Look at the Petroleum Training Institute for an example. You give us Petroleum Training Institute, the only thing you can give us is ad-hoc management staff but when it comes to the appointment of substantive principal, you wont give it to the Urhobo man so that the Urhobo man plays second fiddle in their community. In the resources that God has given to them.

Obiuwevbi who was also at one time a commissioner in the Delta State Oil Prdoucing and Development Commission, DESOPADEC also got for an interrogation of the present arrangement in sharing proceeds from the commission.

He said:
“I want to tell the governor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to do the right thing by demanding for the production quota of each of the oil producing communities in Delta State so that government can come up with the true position of the production quota of each community so that mere allocation of figure of production will no longer exist in DESOPADEC. So that Urhobo people in DESOPADEC will not suffer as they are doing now.”
