Basket mouth Nollywood producers

Veteran Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Bright Okpocha, widely known as Basketmouth, has made startling claims about how Nollywood producers handle funds from streaming platforms.

In an interview on Arise News Television, Basketmouth stated that streaming platforms provided large sums of money to movie producers which were misused.

He alleged that only 10% of these funds were used to create the movies, while the rest was spent on personal luxuries like houses and cars.

The comedian further accused some producers of forcing actors to share their earnings when streaming platforms bypass producers and pay the actors directly.

He refrained from naming anyone but stressed that the guilty producers are aware of their actions.

“There was a lot of money when these streaming platforms came in, and these producers use only 10 percent of the monies to make the movies,” he said. “More than 70 percent of these producers, to the extent that the streaming platforms had to pay the actors directly, but some of the producers coerce the actors to give up the monies. They know themselves, but I won’t mention names.”

Meanwhile, there are reports that global streaming giant Netflix has stopped providing funds to Nigerian filmmakers for original content.
