The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has sent his condolences to the families of the children who lost their lives in the tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan.

The incident, which took place at the Islamic High School, Basorun, left at least 35 people dead during an event organized by Wings Foundation.

Authorities have arrested several individuals connected to the event, including the former queen, Naomi Ogunseyi, who is reported to have been involved in the event’s planning. The case has been handed over to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation, led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the Ooni expressed his grief and solidarity with the affected families, recalling Naomi’s previous efforts to support children through similar events Ile-Ife. “We share in the grief and pains that have engulfed the affected families. We pray that Olodumare grants them the fortitude to bear this trying time,” the statement read.

The Ooni emphasized the importance of preventing such tragedies in the future by ensuring strict adherence to safety measures and child welfare policies. The Ooni pledged the support of the House of Oduduwa in bringing relief to the grieving families and affected community following the Funfair stampede.

“While at the Ile Oodua here as a queen, Miss Naomi Silekuola Ogunseyi demonstrated love and care to the children of Ile-Ife through similar events which she executed passionately to give succour to children of indigent parents every December periods like this,” the Ooni’s statement continued.

He also expressed dismay over the unprofessional behavior of certain bloggers, who he accused of sensationalizing the tragedy instead of maintaining journalistic integrity. “The House of Oduduwa encourages all stakeholders, from government officials to the media and citizens, to unite in compassion and constructive dialogue. Let us honour the memories of the departed by fostering a culture of care, respect, and accountability in our communities,” the statement concluded.
