UCH Clarifies Reports On Using Patients’ Generators
By Gideon Ayeni
Amid reports of patients bringing their private generators to assist authorities of the University College Hospital, UCH conduct clinical services, it emerged on Sunday that the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, and the Managing Director of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) are set to visit the hospital.
This comes after more than three months of power supply disruption at the facility.
Meanwhile, UCH management has strongly refuted reports that patients are bringing generators to power hospital wards due to the power outage .The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, described the claim as false, misleading, and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts. Although, he did not deny the power outage.
The report had alleged that patients had resorted to using personal generators due to the power crisis. However, Professor Otegbayo dismissed the claims, stating that the hospital does not operate with small generators as depicted in the report.
“There is no credibility in that report. The so-called mini generators displayed by the writer do not belong to UCH, and the claim that patients supply their own power is baseless,” he stated.
Despite being disconnected from the national grid by IBEDC, Otegbayo assured the public that UCH has taken measures to maintain its core functions in clinical services, research, and training. He highlighted ongoing efforts to provide alternative energy sources, including solar inverters and diesel-powered generators, in critical areas such as wards, emergency units, labor wards, and operating theaters.
UCH management also acknowledged the support of stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and private donors, in tackling the electricity challenge. The hospital reiterated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services and urged the public to disregard misleading reports.
