The Kaduna Electric Distribution Company, KADECO has given reasons why it disconnected electricity supply to the residence of former President Shehu Shagari on Sama Road, Sokoto.

Electricity supply to the residence where the family of the late president still reside was cut off last Wednesday by officials of KADECO over unpaid bills estimated at N6 million.

The electric supply was, however, quickly reconnected same day after an anonymous personality in Sokoto pledged to settle the bill.

President Shagari died in December 2018 at the age of 93. Since then the electricity bill had remained unsettled.

KAEDCO spokesman, Abdulaziz Abdullahi, who confirmed the disconnection to The Punch said, “The bill has not been paid since the former president died on December 28, 2018 at the age of 93.

“The company has given enough grace for them to settle the bills before the disconnection.”

A family source disclosed that prior to Shagari’s death; the state government footed the electricity bills of the former leader.

An official of the Sokoto State government, however, told The Punch that the state government had been shouldering the responsibilities of the Federal Government in catering after the family of the former president saying: “You know the welfare of the late president’s family rests solely on the Federal Government, if the state government assists, it is just out of compassion and respect for the late President.”
