Bayelsa: Former Commissioner Makes U-Turn, Returns To PDP, But Job Uncertain

Six days after resigning his appointment as Commissioner for Mineral Resources and from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Hon Markson Fefegha has changed track and returned to the party. However, there was still confusion as at Thursday evening as to his possible return to his post as a commissioner.

Receiving Fefegha in the Government House, Governor Seriake Dickson also affirmed that the majority of those who have left the PDP were not genuine members and were those who had in the past sabotaged the party.

Announcing his return to the PDP, Fefegha, in a letter to his supporters said:

“It is with a deep sense of responsibility that I address my colleagues, political associates and supporters through this medium.

“You will recall that I resigned my appointment as Hon Commissioner for Mineral Resources on the 18th of October, 2019 because of what I perceived as “political uncertainty” and other considerations.

“This was due largely to the communication gap between me and His Excellency Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson Governor of Bayelsa State at the time. Having met and discussed with him, I have reconsidered my decision to remain in the party and the government.

“Over the years, we have shared bonds of friendship and the mystic cord of brotherhood, which cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political exigencies.

“I shall continue to lavish adulation to his developmental efforts and quality of leadership to Bayelsa State and the Ijaw nation

“I urge all my supporters to remain steadfast and continue to support the People’s Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, there was confusion on Thursday night as to whether he would be returning to his post.

A senior government official speaking off the records told GreenWhiteGreen that since the resignation was not formally accepted by Governor Dickson that the road to his return could not be seriously challenging.

Meanwhile, receiving Fefegha on Thursday, Governor Dickson said that most of the defectors were those who formed an opposition group within the PDP and actually supported the Action Democratic Congress in the last election while the rest refused to work for the party.

He reiterated his position that the defections which he described as infinitesimal would not have any detrimental effect on the electoral fortunes of the PDP in the next gubernatorial election in the state as shown by the general acceptability of the party.

Governor Dickson said that even the very few members of the Restoration Team who left the party are still in touch with the Government.

He said, “I can say confidently that 90 percent of the defectors are outsiders to to the PDP. They have not been at the core of the PDP affairs in the state and most of them were the ones doing anti party, the household of the opposition group within the party.

“A number of them supported the ADC in the last election while others have been on the fence.

“The good people of Bayelsa should note that these purported defections cannot affect the core of what we do in the PDP.

“Only very few people who were part of the PDP have defected and they are still in touch with the leadership of the party because are open to discussion, we are still reaching out to them.”
