Yari, Yerima Lose N10 Million Monthly Upkeep As Zamfara Abolishes Pension Law

The three past governors of Zamfara State are to lose the N10 million monthly upkeep allowance provided for them following the abolishment of the law that stipulated the funds.

The former governors will, however, continue to enjoy their entitlements as provided by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC.

The loss follows the expedited passage of the bill to repeal the funding for the former governors and other political office holders which was costing the state an estimated N700 million yearly.

The payments became an issue when the immediate past governor of the state, Abdulazeez Yari wrote his successor reminding him of the backlog that had not been paid since August, 2019.

Yari in the letter to Governor Bello Matawalle had also complained that his pension had not been paid at all since he left office.

However, the PDP dominated state House of Assembly took a different stance on Tuesday when it fast-tracked a bill to repeal the law setting up the payment for the upkeeps for former political office holders.

Presenting the bill, the leader of the House Faruk Dosara (PDP Maradun I) pleaded with fellow lawmakers to immediately repeal the law.

He said that the law was to the detriment of serving and retired civil servants who were also being owed.

The bill was read the first time, second time and passed at the third reading.

It is now to go to Governor Matawalle for expected assent.
