Nigerians Lament After Trump Rescues Kidnapped American

The value of citizens’ lives has become the center of discourse on social media, following the rescue of an American citizen who was held hostage in Northern Nigeria by the United States Special Forces.
Philip Watson, an American citizen who was kidnapped in Niger Republic and subsequently moved to Northern Nigeria by his abductors was forcefully freed by US military operatives in the early hours of Saturday.
As the news broke into the Nigerian social media sphere, many Nigerians reacted with comments as to the value the leaderships of to the two countries put to the lives of their citizens.
Many of the reactions centered on the value placed on the live of one American citizen by the American Government, to an extent that military personnel were sent to rescue him.
Many Nigerians argued that the Nigerian authorities will not embark on such operation but would rather send out soldiers to shoot at unarmed protesters, just as the incident in Lekki tollgate area of Lagos, on October 20th, 2020.

So there really isn’t any “social contract” in Nigeria.”
