Some of the world’s greatest footballers were on Wednesday paying tribute to the memory of the late football icon, Diego Maradona who has died at 60.

The tributes were led by Pele, with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in toe.

Pele who was unquestionably regarded as the best ever before Maradona became a point of comparison led the tribute writing on his Instagram page:
“Sad news today. I have lost a dear friend, and the world has lost a legend.

“There is much more to say, but for now may God give his family strength.0.

“One day I hope we will play soccer together in the sky.”

Messi who has also lived in the shadow of Maradona while sharing two snaps with the football icon said:

“A very sad day for all Argentines and football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.

“I take all the moments lived with him and wanted to send condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”

Ronaldo also shared a picture with Maradona and wrote: “Today I bid farewell to a friend and the world says farewell to an eternal genius.

The English great, Gary Lineker who was part of the England team Maradona subdued in the 1986 Mexico World Cup wrote:

Reports from Argentina that Diego Armando Maradona has died. By some distance the best player of my generation and arguably the greatest of all time. After a blessed but troubled life, hopefully he’ll finally find some comfort in the hands of God. #RipDiego

Maradona died apparently from a heart attack in his home two weeks after suffering a clot in the brain.

The Argentine FA confirmed the news in a statement on Twitter which read: “The Argentine Football Association, through its President Claudio Tapia, expresses its deepest sorrow for the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona.

“You will always be in our hearts.”
