FG keeps mum over Buhari’s return date

President Muhammadu Buhari arrived London ahead of an appointment with his United Kingdom doctors late on Tuesday as mutterings over the president’s decision to prioritise the United Kingdom for his medical treatments.

Calming the angst of the populace, Mallam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the president insisted that Buhari is not a medical tourist.

The move by Mallam Garba came as RevolutionNow advocate, Omoyele Sowore issued a call to Nigerians in the United Kingdom to storm the UK hospital where Buhari is expected to have his medicals.

Speaking on a Channels Television programme about the same time that the president arrived the UK, Shehu said that the president had used the same UK doctors over 30 years and he needed to sustain the relationship.

Buhari on arrival was led into a waiting car by the welcome team and his security details.

A video of Buhari arriving the United Kingdom and immediately stepping into a waiting vehicle was tweeted by presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad.

Shehu trying to quash criticisms of the president’s medical visit to the United Kingdom said the president decided not to change the medical doctors he had used for more than 30 years.

He said: “I think that, unfortunately, there is the misconception of the president’s trip, seen in the context of medical tourism.

“President Buhari is not a medical tourist — if somebody has kept retainership with medical experts; we are talking about 30 years and plus.

“Each year, they view you and examine you and give you a pass and advise you on what to do. Would you, given this position, be changing your doctors every other year, because there is a chance the distance will be shortened?“I think the president is wise and quite correct in his decision that he retains consistently the set of doctors who have ensured good health for himself.”

The move by Garba came as Omoyele Sowore sought to mobilise Nigerians in the United Kingdom to protest at the hospital where Buhari is expected to receive his medical check-up.
