The unemployment rate in Nigeria at the time of writing is estimated at 33.3 per cent. This has made many youths desperate in their search for a job. Many scammers and dangerous individuals are now leveraging this situation to waste people’s time and in extreme cases harm them. Remember the case of Iniubong Umoren.

The 26-year-old, who graduated from the Department of Philosophy, University of Uyo, with a CGPA of 4.12, was raped and brutally killed after a man lured her on social media with a fake job interview.

It is important to decipher fake job offers. If not for your safety, at least, it would save you from wasting your transport fare and time.

Here are 5 Tips to identify a fake job scam:

Google Search

The largest search engine in the world is always available for your use. Whenever you receive a job alert, post the interview address on Google to search if anyone has previous experience working with the company. You may be lucky to get some comments in the search results that will help ascertain the job offer’s authenticity.

Nairaland Search

Nairaland is the largest forum in Nigeria. Many youths share their experiences here. This is why it has proven over the years to be a valuable platform for verifying the authenticity of any information. You are likely to get comments and experience about a job interview invite here.

LinkedIn Verification

LinkedIn is a social media platform for professionals. Many companies and their employees usually have an account on the platform. Search the name of the company to get possible clues.

CAC Public Search

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) website allows anybody in search of information about a company to use its portal. If the company has a website, scroll down to the bottom, they are likely to state the name of their parent company. Search this name on the CAC portal.

Friends

Ask your friends and family if they have heard of the company before. Also, in case you decide to visit the venue of the interview, let your friends and family know of your movement. Call them from time to time to give an update on your movement.
