Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, says there’s no difference between him and Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike regarding party affairs.

Wike, a force to reckon with in Nigerian politics and influential governor in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, rooted for  Aminu Tambuwal against Atiku in the 2019 PDP presidential primaries. But  Atiku defeated his candidate to secure the party’s ticket, a development that irked Wike. .

Speaking with reporters in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Atiku said he met with Mr Wike to reconcile party affairs and position the opposition party to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2023.

“Well, I came here to reconcile with the governor on party affairs and how we can ensure that there is unity and stability in the party,” Atiku said.

“So, that we can take over government in 2023. I believe that Nigerians can’t wait for 2023 to come, so that PDP will return.”

“I think he (Wike) is the topmost governor we have in the party. There is no doubt about that in terms of projects, youths and employment, in terms of security. Yes, we have security challenges all over the country,” the former vice president stated.

Lamenting insecurity and economic hardship in the country under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku said the PDP will come up with policies to rescue the country.

“I have never seen it (insecurity) this bad. I am 70 years plus, I have never seen it this bad in terms of security challenges, in terms of economy, in terms of unemployment. This is the worst.

“Why can’t you give us time. We will come up with our policies. We will present them to Nigerians when the time comes,” Atiku told reporters.

“We have done that before. Under PDP, we recorded the highest economic growth, the best foreign reserves, we reduced unemployment. You know that we can do it?”

Analysts believe Atiku decision to mend fence with Wike is part of an elaborate plan to facilitate his emergence as the presidential candidate the opposition party.
