Newcastle Begin Post-Bruce Era With 1-1 Draw Against Crystal Palace

Newcastle rescued a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace thanks to a second-half overhead kick from Callum Wilson against the run of play at Selhurst Park.

Palace, who utterly dominated possession throughout the contest, were left ruing missed chances that could have given them only a third Premier League win of the season.

Christian Benteke scored the opening goal for the Eagles, towering above the Newcastle defence at the back post to nod home a high cross. But the Belgian could so easily have had a hat-trick with slightly sharper finishing.

Benteke hit the post in the first half and then the crossbar in the second, as well as firing wide when presented with a gilt-edged chance to restore Palace’s lead when it was 1-1. He even had the ball in the net once more late on, only to see a VAR check rule it out because of a foul.

Newcastle’s equaliser came completely out of the blue. The Magpies had been poor going forward and had seen so little of the ball that creativity was almost non-existent.

Yet Wilson showed his poacher’s instinct following a set piece when a loose ball kept alive in the penalty area popped up and was ripe for an improvised overhead kick. The ball flashed into the Palace net, and while the hosts restored their dominance thereafter, including the late ‘winner’ that was chalked off following a review, 1-1 was how it finished.
